St. Louis Family Medicine Residency Curriculum


Weekly Conferences

Family medicine conferences are held at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - St. Louis every Thursday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Core Lecture Series

These presentations cover core family medicine topics given by family physicians and specialists from both SLU and the community.

Longitudinal Board Review

This twice monthly series covers board review topics presented by our core faculty.

Resident/Faculty Meeting

This monthly meeting allows residents and faculty to address issues pertinent to the residency. Recommendations for improvement are collectively developed.

Grand Rounds

These monthly lectures are for the entire Saint Louis University Department of Family and Community Medicine with guest speakers.

 Case Conference
Residents present interesting case studies of patients they are currently managing either in the inpatient or outpatient setting.
 Resident Consult
Twice monthly presentations by the residents on core outpatient family medicine topics.
Behavioral Health & Cultural Competency
Monthly series during which residents explore psychosocial, social, and cultural factors relevant to their practice. These lectures are coordinated by our director of behavioral science education, Dr. Gafford, and usually involve guest lecturers from the community. 
 Resident Support Group
Residents discuss their experiences in the program and receive support from each other during this monthly meeting. The group is facilitated by the director of behavioral science education.
 Balint Group
Residents discuss challenging patient interactions, moderated by the director of behavioral science education and behavioral family medicine faculty.
 Practice Management
These conferences are geared toward preparing residents for contract negotiations, job interviews and effectively managing a practice.
 Journal Club
Quarterly rigorous review of important journal articles presented by our upper-level residents to their peers and faculty.
 Root Cause Analysis/Morbidity and Mortality

Quarterly presentations and discussions about challenging cases from both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

 Discussion of the practice at Family Care Health Center.
