Letter from the Chiefs
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Saint Louis University. We are excited to share with you some of the features which make this program such a great residency experience. To start, thanks to the partnership between SSM Health and Saint Louis University, we will have access to brand new, state of the art medical facilities that are under construction and scheduled to open in 2020.
In addition to the exciting new facilities, our ever-evolving curriculum allows for flexibility to meet the needs of each class as they transition from intern through to graduation. As a clinical based intern, you will gain exposure to general medicine as well as surgical subspecialties. Our clinical based year is unique in the sense that you are afforded 5 anesthesia oriented months. This time is split between pre-anesthesia clinic, the anesthesia intensive care service, working in the operating room with senior residents, and learning health care administrative skills in our practice management course. These months will allow you to form bonds with your anesthesia colleagues and the entire anesthesia department. Clinical Anesthesia year one is designed to provide a strong academic and procedural foundation through the early exposure to a wide-ranging diversity of cases. Clinical Anesthesia year two focuses on anesthesia subspecialties through rotations at our main campus as well as several area hospitals. Clinical Anesthesia year three is an opportunity for graduating seniors to work with junior residents in a supervisory role and allows for participation in a growing number of elective rotations.
Morning Keywords, weekly lectures, Journal Clubs, Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality conference and simulation lab sessions are some of the academic activities that complement our extensive clinical exposure. Many of our residents participate in national and subspecialty conferences, funded by the department. Whether in a clinical setting or taking advantage of these educational opportunities, Saint Louis University provides a well-rounded learning environment.
The Saint Louis University health campus is situated close to downtown Saint Louis as well as Forest Park. This fantastic location allows for a short drive from any of the unique neighborhoods in the greater Saint Louis area. Whether you are interested in family fun, nightlife, or entertainment, The Gateway City has options for everyone. Not only is Saint Louis University a great place for residency, with high acuity cases and great educational experiences, but it is also a tightknit community. Our anesthesia program affords incoming residents an opportunity to gain superior clinical skills while maintaining a reasonable work life balance.
We look forward to meeting you.
