Call for Proposals: Reinert Center Winter Institute 2020

The Reinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning invites proposals for our annual Winter Institute, a day-long event on teaching held each January that consists of an interactive keynote/workshop as well as presentations by faculty from across the University.  This year, our theme for the event is *Learning-Centered Courses.

We seek proposals from Saint Louis University faculty for 5-7 minute presentations on unique aspects of their courses that make them “learning-centered.” While each presenter is asked to give a bit of background and contextual information about their course, the majority of the presentation time should be devoted to describing the learning-centered aspect(s) of the course. While composing your proposal, some helpful questions to answer include, but are not limited to:

  1. How is my course learning-centered? Is there one aspect of the course, that could be highlighted as specifically learning-centered?
  2. Why did I choose to make this particular aspect of this particular course learning-centered?
  3. What design decisions did I make in order to make my course learning-focused? What design changes did I make to make my course more learning-focused?
  4. What details about my course will be interesting and useful to my colleagues from across the university?

*In Making Learning-Centered Teaching Work: Practical Strategies for Implementation, Phyllis Blumberg uses the term, “learning-centered teaching” to mean “an evidence-based educational practice that focuses on what students are learning, how they learn, and the application of learning” (3). The Reinert Center uses the term similarly.
